해탈원은 충청북도 음성군에 위치한 법화림에 지어지는 템플스테이 건물이다. 법화림은 법정스님의 제자인 덕현스님이 창건한 사찰 및 불교수행공동체이다. 선불교의 핵심인 참선과 명상을 중심으로 불교활동을 펼쳐 나간다. 법화림에는 커다란 참나무들이 둘러싼 빈 부지가 있는데 이미 땅의 형상이 원형을 하고 있다. 이에 착안하여 가운데 중정을 가지는 원형의 수평 건축물을 제안하였다. 원형 공간은 지형과 장소를 반영하는 것을 넘어 대승불교가 가지는 근본정신을 상징한다. 산중턱에 자리한 대지에서 아래를 바라보면 남향으로 음성군의 평야와 들판이 파노라마로 펼쳐지는데 이는 그대로 건축공간의 내외부 경험으로 연결된다. 템플스테이에 참가한 사람들이 각자의 방에서 명상을 하면 가운데 중정과 함께 산 아래의 풍경 혹은 울창한 참나무들의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 중정에는 연꽃이 있는 수공간을, 그 주위에는 탑돌이처럼 산책하며 행선을 할 수 있는 공간을 마련하였다.

Haetalwon is a temple stay building planned in Beophwarim located in Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Beophwarim is a temple and Buddhist practice community founded by Venerable Deokhyeon, a disciple of Venerable Beopjeong. Beophwarim’s activities are conducted centering on meditation, the core of Zen Buddhism. There is an empty site surrounded by large oak trees in Beophwarim land, the shape of the site is already circular. Based on the site condition, a circular horizontal structure with a central courtyard was proposed. The circular space symbolizes the fundamental spirit of Mahayana Buddhism beyond topography and place. Looking down from the site located on the hillside, the fields of Eumseong-gun are unfolded in a panoramic view toward the south, which is directly connected to the internal and external experiences of the proposed architectural space. When people participating in Temple Stay program in their own rooms, they can see the scenery of the surrounding mountains and oak trees. In the courtyard, a water space with lotus flowers was provided, and a circular passage for walking meditation.
