프로젝트 청림재는 경기도 가평군 선촌리 강가에 위치한다. 청림재는 ‘푸른 숲속의 거처’라는 뜻이다. 건축주는 은퇴한 신경과 의사와 현직에 있는 병리과 의사 부부이다. 대지 바로 앞에는 청평호수의 지류가 부드러운 곡선으로 흐르고, 주변에는 수목이 울창하다. 기존의 가파른 대지에는 부서지기 쉬운 퇴적암과 잡목이 뒤엉켜 있었다. 설계와 공사가 까다로운 땅이었다.
Project Cheongnimjae is located on the riverside of Seonchon-ri, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. The name means a place that dwells in a deep blue forest. The owners are a retired neurologist and a current pathologist. Just in front of the land, a small river of Cheongpyeong Lake flows in a gentle curve, and the surrounding area is covered with dense trees. The original steep land was entangled with fragile sedimentary rocks and undergrowth. It was a difficult land to design and construct.

초기 설계 과정에서, 경사지와 여러 기능의 관계를 풀어가는 방안을 모색했다. 우선 경사지를 파내고 건물을 지을 수밖에 없었다. 흙과 퇴적암은 구조적으로 약했다. 주어진 프로그램은 크게 두 종류였다. 하나는 클리닉 혹은 갤러리로 쓰일 다목적 공간이고, 다른 하나는 의사 부부가 쉴 수 있는 사적 라운지였다. 두 프로그램은 어느 정도 분리할 필요가 있었다. 다양한 매스와 공간 구성 스터디를 진행했다. 최종으로 도출한 안은 하부(B2 레벨) 강변 오솔길에서 다목적 공간으로, 상부(2F 레벨) 주택가 도로에서 사적 라운지로 진입하는 구성이었다. 두 프로그램을 수직으로 적층한 것이다. 하나의 단단한 암석과 같은 건축을 디자인 개념으로 삼았다.
In the early design process, Various ways to make the relationship between the slope and various functions were explored. First, there was no choice but to dig up the slope and build a building. The soil and sedimentary rock were structurally weak. There were two major programs given. One was a multipurpose space that could be used as a clinic or library/study, and the other was a private lounge where the client doctor couple could rest. The two programs needed to be separated to some extent. Different mass and space composition studies were conducted. The final plan was to enter the multipurpose space from the riverside path on the lower B2 level and the private lounge from the residential road on the upper 2F level. The two programs were stacked vertically. The design concept was to create an architecture that resembles a solid rock.

각 층의 내부 기능을 외부 풍경과 연계하는 일은 중요했다. 실마다 고유한 풍경과 감각이 담기도록 계획했다. 지하1층 다목적 공간에서는 강을 따라 수평 파노라마가, 2층 메인 라운지에서는 강에서 하늘로 올라가는 수직 풍경이, 3층 휴식 공간에서는 라운지 상부를 관통하여 동쪽의 일출이, 다이닝에서는 서쪽의 일몰이 보이도록 했다. 밖에서는 단일 건물이지만, 안에서는 서로 다른 삶과 풍경의 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 건물 전체 외부 마감에는 국내산 황토색 벽돌을 사용했다. 대지의 흙 색상과 비슷한 것을 골랐다. 경사지를 파낸 만큼 새로운 땅이 우뚝 선 느낌으로 보이기 원했다. 1층 서재 외벽에는 원래 벽돌 영롱쌓기를 제안했는데, 전면유리창으로 변경되었다. 계획한 영롱쌓기의 빛구멍 패턴은 건축주 부부가 고른 성경 구절을 점자로 만든 것이었다. 이것이 실현되지 못한 점은 아쉬움으로 남는다.
It was important to connect the internal functions of each floor with the external landscape. Each room was designed to have its own unique view and sense. The multipurpose space on the first basement floor has a horizontal panorama along the river, the main lounge on the second floor has a vertical view from the river to the sky, the relaxation space on the third floor has a view of the sunrise in the east through the upper part of the main lounge, and the dining room has a view of the sunset in the west. From the outside, it is a single building, but inside, stories of different lives and landscapes unfolded. Domestic brown bricks were used for the exterior finish. Materials similar to the color of the earth were chosen. It aimed to create new solid rock-like architecture standing on the slope. The exterior wall of the study on the first floor was originally proposed to be a special brick stacking wall with light holes, However, it was changed to a full glass window. The planned brick wall with light hole pattern was to be a Braille version of the Bible verses selected by the client. Unfortunately, this was not realized.

숲과 강가에서 자연은 계절에 따라 하루하루가 다르다. 청림재에서는 이를 온전하게 즐길 수 있다. 안에 있는 사람과 밖에 있는 자연은 다양한 방식으로 만난다. 그 사이에서 건축은 고유한 역할을 한다. 예전에는 강과 자연의 소리만 울렸다면, 이제는 사람과 건축과 자연이 합주하는 새로운 선율이 공명한다.
In the forest and along the river, nature is different every day depending on the season. At Cheongnimjae, one can fully experience this. People inside and nature outside meet in various ways. In between, architecture plays a unique role. In the past, only the sound of nature by the river resonated, but now a new melody of people, architecture, and nature harmonizing together resonates.
