가로, 세로, 높이 각 9미터의 이 작은 프로젝트는 아름다운 바다가 펼쳐진 경상남도 남해섬의 한 마을에 계획된 ‘빛과 기억의 공간’이다. 같은 성씨를 쓰고 일생을 함께 산 마을 사람들은 이제 더 이상 마을 뒤 선산에 묻히지 못한다. 고향 땅에 묻히지 못하는 그들은 낯선 타지에 터를 잡는다. ‘빛의 채플’은 과포화 되어 버린 선산에 더 이상 묻히지 못하는 사람들, 이미 선산에서 안식에 들어간 할아버지, 할머니들, 현재의 마을에서 살아가는 사람들, 그리고 고향과 바다를 찾아 먼 길을 달려오는 타지의 가족들을 위한, 마을 공동의 추모 공간이다.
This small project, measuring 9 meters in width, length, and height, is a ‘Space of Light and Memory’ planned in a village in Namhae Island, where the beautiful ocean spreads out. The villagers who shared their lives with the same surname are no longer buried in the mountain family cemetery behind the village. Unable to be buried in their homeland, they find a place in an unfamiliar place. ‘Light Chapel’ is a village common memorial space for those who cannot be buried in Seonsan, the grandfathers and grandmothers already buried in Seonsan, and those living in the present village, and families from other regions who are running a long way to their hometown and the ocean.

“한마을에서 태어나고 자라 그 마을에서 살다가 죽어 그 마을 어딘가에 묻힌 사람들의 일생은 참으로 아름다웠다. 나는 지금 내가 사랑하는 마을의 봄 여름 가을 겨울의 모든 나무와 풀과 꽃과 하늘의 별과 달, 그리고 하늘을 나는 새들과 나비와 별들, 모든 돌멩이와 바위들과 물고기들, 논과 밭, 맑은 햇살과 하얀 눈송이들과 산에 내리는 빗줄기들, 그들과 더불어 한 몸으로 살았던 햅쌀같이 고운 사람들의 얼굴과 몸짓들이 푸른 물결과 함께 떠오른다.”

빛의 채플은 남해 바다의 반짝이는 일렁임에 착안하여 벽돌 틈으로 빛이 새어 들어오게 계획하였다. 하루와 계절의 변화에 따라 바다의 빛이 변화하듯, 추모 공간 내부의 빛도 변화한다.

I, in my beloved village in spring, summer, autumn, winter, love all trees, grass, flowers, stars and moon in the sky, birds and butterflies, all stones and rocks, fish, rice fields, sunny sunshine, snowflakes, rain on the mountain, and the faces of people who lived with them as one body.”

Light Chapel was designed on the basis of the sparkling waves of the Namhae sea and made the light leak through the bricks. Just as the light of the sea changes with the changes of the day and season, the light inside the memorial space also changes.
